Gail Mellow is president of LaGuardia Community College, City University of New York. During her nine-year tenure, La Guardia has won numerous awards for innovative educational programs and approaches. Its students pursue baccalaureate education at over twice the national average, and the institution is a leader in using e-portfolios for teaching and assessment. Before assuming her position at LaGuardia, Mellow served in various capacities at community colleges in Maryland, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, as an adjunct faculty member, faculty member, academic dean, provost, and president. In addition, she was the director of the Women’s Center at the University of Connecticut and the director of the Project on Women and Technology.
Mellow has also held leadership positions at a number of national higher education associations, serving on the boards of the American Association for Higher Education, the National Commission for Cooperative Education, the Community College Research Center, the Council for the Advancement of Adult Literacy, the National Workforce Strategies Board, and the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience.
Mellow is the co-author of three books and more than 30 articles. Her third book, Minding the Dream: The American Community College, was published in 2008. She received an A.A. from Jamestown Community College, a B.A. from SUNY Albany, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from The George Washington University.
