Undergraduate Education

Through the Foundation’s work in undergraduate education, we investigate the conditions under which teaching occurs, what it looks like, and how to expand upon it in order to improve and advance classroom teaching and student learning at colleges and universities. We also work to support a definition of liberal education that includes a commitment to diversity and supports the engagement and empowerment of students as participating and contributing members of society.

Professional and Graduate Education

Carnegie has a long history in the study of professional education, beginning with The Flexner Report in 1910 and legal education in the 1930s, which had dramatic effects on both fields. We continue this tradition, not only with the study of several professions, but also with an examination of the doctorate, the professional degree for college and university teachers.

K-12 and Teacher Education

The Foundation’s work with K-12 teachers and those who educate teachers involves the development of dynamic examples of exceptional classroom teaching in diverse classroom settings to give educators the pedagogical tools to further advance the preparation of our nation’s teaching force.

Knowledge Sharing

As Carnegie brings together researchers, teachers, policymakers and members of organizations with common interests in education, we work to invent new knowledge and to develop tools and ideas that allow us to foster positive change and enhanced learning in our nation’s colleges and schools.
