Undergraduate Education

Through the Foundation’s work in undergraduate education, we investigate the conditions under which teaching occurs, what it looks like and how to expand upon it in order to improve and advance classroom teaching and student learning at colleges and universities. We also work to support a definition of liberal education that includes a commitment to diversity and supports the engagement and empowerment of students as participating and contributing members of society.

Current work in this area:

Business, Entrepreneurship and Liberal Learning

The BELL project seeks to learn how educators can help ensure that the many undergraduate students who major in business and other professional fields gain the benefits of a strong liberal arts education.

Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Program in Higher Education

CASTL works to develop a scholarship of teaching that will improve student learning, enhance the practice and profession of teaching, and bring to teaching the recognition and rewards afforded to other forms of scholarly work.

Integrative Learning Project

A three-year project that worked with 10 selected campuses to develop and assess advanced models and strategies to help students pursue learning in more intentional, connected ways.

Political Engagement Project

The Political Engagement Project addresses a serious problem facing American democracy - the growing disengagement of young people from politics.

Strengthening Pre-Collegiate Education in Community Colleges

The SPECC program works with community colleges to strengthen teaching and learning in pre-collegiate or developmental mathematics and English language arts courses.

U.S. Professors of the Year Program

Each year, the Professors of the Year program recognizes faculty members for their achievement as undergraduate professors.

Previous work in this area:

Cultures of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Higher Education and the Development of Moral and Civic Responsibility

This program examined how U.S. colleges and universities prepared their students for morally and civically responsible lives, and then sought
to strengthen these efforts.
