Under the Direction of the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, the Managing Director of Educative Communications will plan and implement the Foundation’s communications and field-building efforts. They will lead the Educative Communications team, working on the front lines of delivering key content and messages to internal and external audiences. The Managing Director will oversee the development of print and digital products that guide, inform, and influence researchers, policymakers, and practitioner audiences.
- Provide direction, supervision, and leadership to the Educative Communications team and liaise with other departments as needed to collaborate on and implement the Foundation’s communications strategic plans that support field-building initiatives.
- Develop and implement project management approach to organizing and sequencing the communication team’s work.
- Drive the case study development process, under the direction of the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, including managing timelines, coordinating editorial reviews, and overseeing development of ancillary media, such as video interviews and articles.
- Manage content production with the goal of engaging key audiences through various media platforms, channels, and products; including for print, public website, email, video, and social media.
- Work with program associates to develop web-based material as educative resources.
- Collaborate with Carnegie event teams on communications related to the Summit on Improvement in Education and the Spotlight on Quality in Continuous Improvement.
- Maintain contacts and reach out to members of the press; write and edit press releases, and field media inquiries.
- Identify opportunities in the rapidly changing ecosystem for improving and enhancing the Foundation’s communications strategy and plan.
- Develop, document, and maintain processes for quality in content development and creation as well as technical production.
- Develop and manage the team-wide master calendar and develop and maintain systems for tracking on key deliverables.
Writing, Editing, Publications
- Provide writing, editing, and copyediting support for publications, email, and website, including messaging related to Carnegie events and courses.
- Collaborate with Carnegie staff, editors, consultants, and vendors on the development and production of communications materials.
- Work with the Communications team and other stakeholders to define requirements related to redesign of the Foundation’s website, and document and communicate plans such that content on the public website is up-to-date, relevant, and furthers the Foundation’s work.
- Monitor and report on key content and user analytics and usage. Use analytics data to recommend and adjust content and communications strategy.
- Create and edit content for email campaigns to share news and information about the Foundation’s work.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, English, or other relevant field; a graduate degree is preferred.
- Knowledge of the educational research, policy, and/or funding space.
- Understanding of web communications best practices, including social media, email marketing, CRM, web, and email analytics
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in communicating educational research, policy, and/or funding
- Proven skills in management of people and projects.
- Proven ability to initiate, lead, and manage projects from beginning to end with a sense of strategic direction.
- Outstanding writing and editing skills, especially related to web and email copy.
- High level of skill and competency in copyediting.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must be very flexible and comfortable working in an environment with a high degree of ambiguity where processes, timelines, and targets are evolving quickly.
- Must exhibit sound judgment, be dependable, and be willing and eager to learn.
- Ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines in a calm, courteous, and professional manner; must be resourceful and highly organized.
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously as a member of a close knit team in a collaborative culture.
