Improvement Dispositions: Overview & Reflection Activity

There are several dispositions or mindsets that can cultivate an improvement culture and fuel improvement efforts. This set of resources for instructors or facilitators includes a brief handout summarizing key improvement dispositions as well as individual and group reflection activities that can be used to introduce the dispositions and encourage conversations around how to foster them within a community.

Improvement dispositions include the inclinations, sensitivities, and abilities that seasoned educational improvers reported were critical in their development as improvers and building this capacity in others. The improvement dispositions highlighted in these resources were adapted from Biag, M., & Sherer, D. (2021). Getting better at getting better: Improvement dispositions in education. Teachers College Record, 123(4).

This set of resources includes the following materials:

  • Improvement Dispositions Overview – Handout highlighting key improvement dispositions; can be used as a summary after the dispositions have been introduced
  • Individual Activity: Improvement Dispositions Self-Assessment – Individuals reflect on their own strengths and areas of growth for each disposition
  • Group Activity: Improvement Dispositions Visual Glossary (introductory slides and participant handouts) – Groups create posters depicting dispositions in action, encourages collective sensemaking and conversations about how to embody dispositions
