Consolidating Your Understanding of a Problem Using a Fishbone Diagram

This session, presented at the 2022 Summit on Improvement in Education, introduces key causal system analysis tools and discusses how fishbone diagrams can be leveraged to organize root causes and to deepen shared understanding of the problem and the system producing it.

Before we can begin to learn how to address and solve a persistent problem, we must deeply understand the system surrounding it. This session will provide an overview of causal system analysis (CSA)—a method for gaining a common understanding of the problem around which an improvement team works. In this session, participants are introduced to a variety of CSA tools, then they explore in depth the use of the fishbone diagram to consolidate learnings and reveal key levers that provide improvers with a starting point to address a problem.
