New Carnegie Classifications Released; 41 Universities Gain R1 Status

The American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching have released a new research classification of colleges and universities.

The new framework relies on an updated, streamlined methodology that resulted in 41 more institutions being given “Research 1: Very High Spending and Doctorate Production” or “R1” status, the highest — and most coveted — rank.
