John Ayers is the Foundation’s vice president/treasurer. He came to Carnegie after working as a consultant in Chicago and on national school reform efforts. In 2008, he launched Union Park High Schools, a school management organization, with plans to create four charter high schools in Chicago in a unique partnership with three labor unions. He has also worked with National-Louis University on its urban education strategies. He serves as a senior associate at the National Association of Charter School Authorizers, which supports quality practices in the organizations that grant and oversee America’s 4,600 charter schools. For ten years Ayers was the executive director of Leadership for Quality Education (LQE), a major reform group in Chicago, where he focused on principal leadership, small schools, charter schools and school governance. In the late 1990s, Ayers worked closely with Carnegie President Anthony Bryk as he was designing and launching the award-winning Consortium on Chicago School Research. He has a master’s in business administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
