This session, recorded at the 2020 Summit on Improvement in Education, explores considerations for organizing an improvement effort and building a learning system to develop and refine a theory of improvement and make progress towards an improvement goal.
Putting a theory of improvement into practice requires a theory of action. That is, the theory of action operationalizes the theory of improvement toward achieving the desired goal by answering such questions as Which levers should I work on first? and How should I sequence my improvement journey? This session explores considerations for developing a theory of action and focuses on the social and logistical structures that create the opportunity for real improvement to occur. The use of a learning system is discussed, including its connections to measurement as a mechanism for understanding systems performance and to knowledge as a predictor of where change will lead to improved outcomes.
