Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycle

The Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycle is a method for iteratively testing changes in a complex system. It involves four key steps that enable intentional learning about the implementation and impact of a specific change idea. This approach stands in contrast to traditional methods for introducing new practices in educational systems by focusing on engaging in quick, small-scale tests to refine a change idea prior to scaling it across a system.

A key element of a PDSA cycle is the specific change idea being tested. Utilized within an improvement science approach, change ideas are defined as specific work practices or interventions that alter how work is accomplished within a system. Tied to a theory of practice improvement, these change ideas connect to key drivers that impact the overall improvement aim.

These resources provide an overview of  the PDSA cycle and the role of iterative testing to ensure that a change idea produces a quality outcome reliably and at scale. They also discuss considerations for developing change ideas that target key system structures, processes, and norms.
