Applying the Driver Diagram to your Local Context (Facilitating Improvement Teams Video Series #4)

This video highlights a protocol that improvement team facilitators and coaches can utilize to help others connect their local work to an existing theory of improvement. The protocol guides teams to prioritize high-leverage areas of their system (drivers) to focus on in order to reach their aim.

The sample protocol introduced in this video offers guidance to improvement team facilitators and coaches as they lead teams to understand a theory of improvement represented by a driver diagram. The presenter walks through a case-based example to demonstrate how a facilitator might structure a meeting to introduce the elements of a theory (aim statement, drivers, and change ideas). The example is used to illustrate one way to lead a team to identify the high-leverage areas of the system to prioritize as they move forward in their improvement work based on knowledge of how a problem manifests in their local context. This video highlights the value of helping a team see their work as part of a larger network or organization’s efforts and align to a broader goal or strategy.

Facilitators are encouraged to adapt the protocol from this video based on the needs of their team and local context.
