About the Future of High School Network
The Carnegie Foundation and XQ Future of High School (FHS) Network is driven by a vision for education that goes beyond the constraints of the traditional Carnegie Unit. The FHS Network embraces a new educational architecture built on a competency-based model that prioritizes meaningful learning over seat time. The Network catalyzes learning, innovation and progress to drive evidence and implementation towards a new architecture for high school nationwide.
The initiative is deeply aligned with Carnegie’s National Research and Development Agenda designed to identify and prioritize research questions to build evidence for how systems move beyond the Carnegie Unit at scale.

This effort is supported by leading national institutions, including the XQ Institute, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Walton Family Foundation, Youth Thriving Through Learning Fund, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Together, the Future of High School Network members will work to modernize current outdated systems and scale competency-based high school models designed to accelerate student engagement, achievement and success in postsecondary education and work.
