The Carnegie Foundation Welcomes Doug Shulman to the Board of Trustees

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching is pleased to announce that Doug Shulman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OneMain Financial, has joined the Board of Trustees.

“We are thrilled Doug has agreed to serve as a trustee,” said Diane Tavenner, Chair of the Carnegie Foundation Board of Trustees. “Not only will he bring world-class expertise in finance, organizational development and management, he brings a long standing commitment to financial literacy and the pursuit of educational equity.”

“I feel very, very fortunate that Doug has agreed to join the board,” said Timothy F.C. Knowles, President of the Carnegie Foundation. “He brings a rare combination of assets to Carnegie – leadership of large systems, an entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for creating more pathways to opportunity for hardworking Americans and more upward economic mobility for the country as a whole.”

Doug Shulman is Chairman and CEO of OneMain Financial, where he leads the nation’s largest nonprime lender focused on improving the financial well-being of hardworking Americans by providing responsible lending products. He came to OneMain in 2018 from BNY Mellon, where he served as Senior Executive Vice President, Global Head of Client Service Delivery, and a member of the Executive Committee. Prior to BNY Mellon, Doug was a Senior Advisor at McKinsey & Company. From 2008 to 2012, he served as the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), where he directed a transformation of the agency’s technology, drove customer service metrics to historic levels and led important breakthroughs in addressing international tax evasion. Earlier in his career, Doug was an entrepreneur, a vice president at a private investment firm and part of the founding team that launched Teach for America. He graduated from Georgetown University Law Center with a juris doctorate, magna cum laude. He also holds a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College.

“It’s an honor to join the Carnegie Foundation Board of Trustees and be a part of an organization that is reimagining our nation’s approach to K-12 and higher education,” said Shulman. “I believe deeply in Carnegie’s mission to drive transformational change in education, and I look forward to supporting their work to improve educational outcomes and address long-standing educational inequities.”

“In this country, it is far too difficult for many hard-working people from low-income backgrounds—especially young people—to connect to opportunity,” said Knowles. “I look forward to working closely with Doug to catalyze the field of education so that many more young people from underserved communities have access to purposeful, wealth-building careers.”
