Facilitating Improvement Teams℠ is an intermediate-level course for individuals seeking to build their skills in facilitating small improvement teams through cycles of testing and learning. Through both reflection and practical application, participants build understanding of improvement dispositions and how to foster them, hone skills for communicating with diverse audiences about improvement and change, and learn strategies for supporting social learning to advance an improvement aim. Through hands-on practice in which they work in their own local context to lead an improvement team, participants also develop concrete skills in supporting others through Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles and facilitating improvement activities.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be prepared to:
- Lead improvement activities and routines at the team level
- Develop improvement team members’ abilities to improve
This is an intermediate-level course intended for those who have participated in improvement efforts and want to extend and strengthen their skills as leaders of small teams. Participants should be in a position to convene or lead an improvement team in their local context following the 2-day workshop.
Participants should bring to the course direct experience learning through PDSA cycles and a strong conceptual understanding of improvement science. Participants may have completed both Introduction to Networked Improvement Basics℠ and Improvement Science in Practice: Finding Solutions Through Iterative Testing℠ or have equivalent experience.
Facilitating Improvement Teams℠ is conducted via an online learning platform in which participants access course materials and participate in interactive discussion boards with other participants and instructors. Learning in this environment is supported by multiple live interactive webinars, a virtual workshop, and small-group coaching sessions.

Currently, this is a fully virtual course.
This course is designed for individuals. Participants should be in a position to lead an improvement team that is working independently or as part of a networked improvement community in their home context while they are enrolled in the course.
During the initial four weeks of the course, participants should expect to attend two, 90-minute webinars and spend about two hours completing activities between webinars. Following the 2-day workshop, participants should plan to prepare for and meet with a local improvement team weekly or biweekly for the remaining eight weeks of the course. During that time, participants have the option to join three, 1-hour small group coaching sessions and should plan to attend a final 90-minute webinar.
